Accountability with Care

A place to work, think, ask, and move forward—in community

Accountability With Care is a care-centered coworking community for scholars, educators, creatives, and professionals navigating meaningful work. Members arrive with dissertations, manuscripts, research, applications, lesson plans, creative projects, administrative tasks—or simply the thing they have been struggling to begin.

Founded in 2020 as Writing Accountability, the community has grown into a sustained practice of accountability without abandonment—honoring both what people are working toward and the people doing the work.

Includes:

  • Protected time to focus and make progress

  • Gentle accountability and reflection

  • Research and writing questions worked through in community

  • Shared resources, opportunities, and collective knowledge

  • Space to think through challenges and identify next steps

  • Encouragement and celebration through the difficult stretches of the work

  • Connection with people who understand that how we move matters alongside what we accomplish

Working & Wining

Working & Wining is a virtual writing + wellness retreat primarily for Black femmes and women creating intentional space to write, rest, reflect, and move meaningful work forward in community. The retreat holds focused work and restoration alongside one another, recognizing that sustainable progress requires space for both.

Working & Wining is designed around the belief that rest and care do not have to wait until the work is finished. Each retreat creates room for participants to tend to themselves while tending to the work that matters to them.

Includes:

  • Protected writing and focused work time

  • Wellness practices woven throughout the retreat

  • Guided reflection and intention-setting

  • Opportunities to pause, rest, and reset

  • Community conversations and shared learning

  • Space to celebrate progress without measuring worth by productivity

  • Connection with others navigating meaningful scholarly, creative, and professional work

Research, Writing & Dissertation Support

Sometimes moving forward means having someone think alongside you.

Research, Writing & Dissertation Support offers individualized, relationship-centered support for scholars navigating research, academic writing, dissertations, and the many decisions that accompany meaningful scholarly work. Support begins with where you are—not where someone assumes you should be.

The goal is not to take ownership of your work or prescribe a single path forward. It is to provide thought partnership, practical support, and space to see your work more clearly, make informed decisions, and move forward in ways that remain your own.

Support might include:

  • Clarifying research ideas, questions, and next steps

  • Thinking through research design and methodological decisions

  • Developmental feedback on chapters, manuscripts, proposals, and other scholarly writing

  • Working through advisor, committee, reviewer, or collaborator feedback

  • Preparing for milestones, presentations, and scholarly conversations

  • Creating realistic research and writing plans

  • Breaking complex or overwhelming work into manageable next steps

  • Getting unstuck when the challenge is not simply “write more”

  • Identifying resources, strategies, and questions to carry back into your own work

  • Accountability and continued support as the work develops

Workshops and Partnerships

Let’s create something responsive to the people it is meant to serve.

At the Pace of Love™ partners with universities, organizations, programs, and communities to design care-centered learning experiences responsive to their people, purpose, and context. Rather than beginning with a one-size-fits-all offering, partnerships can begin with a conversation about what your community is navigating and what meaningful support might look like.

Offerings draw from Dr. Flemming’s experience across science education, research, curriculum development, facilitation, mentoring, program development, and community-building to create experiences with enough structure to move toward a purpose and enough flexibility to respond to the people in the room.

Collaborations might include:

  • Interactive workshops and professional development

  • Research and academic writing development

  • Dissertation and thesis planning

  • Research design and methodological thinking

  • Writing retreats and focused work experiences

  • Accountability and coworking communities

  • Scholar development and mentoring experiences

  • Facilitation and community-building

  • Customized programs and learning experiences

  • Retreats and wellness-centered programming

Endorsements

  • “This space has supported me through writing my dissertation, publishing manuscripts, presentations, and transitioning into the professional world. Now that I'm a professional its a space where I can focus on tasks that need to be done, especially the ones that are time sensitive.”

    Nicola Smith
Assistant Professor · Accountability With Care Member

  • “Honestly, being in this space has changed me for the better. It has taught me to be more aware and appreciative of those around me, and to center the collective and cause. Also, I've accomplished many things since being in this space, including my preliminary exam, writing two papers, submitting one paper to a journal, and numerous smaller tasks. And finally I've learned sooo much from everyone regarding life, self-care, boundaries, struggles, triumph, etc…”

    Makeda Mills

  • “Working with Adania has made the final stages of my PhD a little less painful. Her feedback is thoughtful, encouraging, and grounded in questions that help me strengthen my own writing. I've never felt so positive about receiving feedback before.

What I especially appreciate is that she guides rather than rewrites. She offers comments and suggestions while allowing me to maintain full ownership of my work. I can confidently say that the dissertation is mine, while also recognizing how much her support has helped me move forward. I genuinely don't think I would have gotten this far without her.”

  • “The Writing retreat was the first time in my life where I felt surrounded by professionals that were not going to belittle me and my writing progress. The retreat was a supportive space where I got my burning questions answered, learned new techniques, and began to treat myself with empathy when writing. Backwards planning and learning about positive self talk when writing has been transformative to my process and allowed me to complete my results section of my Masters thesis during the duration of the program.”

  • “There is a way in which WA and the Writing Retreat was made personal that is not by chance. It took care and intentions and an understanding that life does not pause for us to focus on work nor can we as human beings work without living the life we are dealt in any given moment; and that we certainly cannot to do so as islands. Supportive structures that acknowledge and facilitate space for communal holding of our lives while we work are needed. WA and the Writing Retreat provides this... And it provides it specifically for black women with an understanding of the unique ways in which we encounter the world. It is an absolute priceless space built on an ethics of care - "At The Pace of Love" according to Adania.”

  • “Attending the virtual writing retreat hosted by Dr. Adania Flemming was a highly impactful and productive experience. Adania and her team designed the retreat very thoughtfully, striking a careful balance between structure and flexibility, and including useful workshops on Notion, backward planning, and writing structure offering practical tools which I’ve already started integrating into my workflow.

The silent co-working sessions throughout the three days created a shared sense of accountability (without pressure), while the breakout rooms allowed for making connections with other Black women across the ecology, evolution, and marine science spaces.

I also appreciated the intentional inclusion of guided meditation and a short movement session, which helped maintain focus and wellbeing throughout the retreat. The overall atmosphere was calm and supportive, and by the end of the three days, I felt more energised, organised, and confident in my writing approach.”

  • “The moments of discussion, where we all were able to echo similar sentiments about progress or fears. Those moments made me feel seen, heard, and supported.”

    Micaiala Hamner
PhD Candidate · Working & Wining Participant

  • “Yes! I feel way more okay working different hours, like 12-5 or 5-9. The backwards planning was extremely helpful because everything is in one manageable place that can be updated. I feel calmer about writing and have more tools to get myself to work.”

    Zuri Murph
    Postbaccalaureate / Early-Career Professional · Working & Wining Participant

  • “Yes, during Adania's love workshop, I was able to become aware that my values have changed - at least until I finish the PhD. I have been much more intentional about honoring those values since the retreat ended.”
